In Nagaland, tobacco is the new headache which has taken children in its grip. In the past two years, the government in this hill state has spent over `33 crore in treating pre-cancerous cases. Alarmed, it has directed all district authorities to undertake surveys to find out if shops are selling tobacco to kids. The health directorate will ban smoking in public places from next week. According to a 2014 survey, 28.3 per cent of the children in the age group of 8-13 years are ‘smokeless users’ of tobacco while 14.8 per cent smoke. Another survey revealed that 37 per cent of the schoolchildren smoke and 41 per cent are addicted to tobacco.
