Commodus Operandi

Popular standup artiste Vir Das talks about his new show in Kochi and the serious side of comedy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Last year, sixteen videos featuring Vir Das in his bathroom received an average of a million hits.

The immense response is what prompted the standup comedian/actor to convert his year-old Potcast series—on which he provides a satirical analysis of the daily news while sitting on a commode—into a touring live show.

“The aim of this tour (titled On The Pot) is to begin a reasonable, intelligent conversation about our country and the world through news stories,” begins the Delhi Belly  actor. “Sure, I’ll make fun of things along  the way but, through comedy, I want to begin a conversation that’s been long pending,” he explains. This Sunday, Das, alongside fellow comedians Ashwin Mushran and Amogh Ranadive, will be showcasing this interactive show at JTPAC.

Chamberpot of secrets
In an age where FIR notifications have become an occupational hazard for standup comedians, the 37-year-old claims that as long as artistes are on the right side of the issue and they’ve shown their audience a good time, they’ve done their job. For those who’ve never watched the YouTube series, Das breaks down the difference between concepts like ‘toilet humour’ and ‘locker room talk’.

“Our responsibility, as artistes who have a voice, is to redefine what people think of these entities with negative stereotypes. We use various platforms to present topics, movements and causes that need awareness and empowerment. My interpretation of ‘toilet humour’ is presenting intelligent, edgy content to like-minded intelligent, edgy audiences...while sitting on a pot,” he concludes.
