Turkey, Syria earthquake: Death toll surpasses 8,400; India sends rescue teams

Rescue teams are searching through the rubble for survivors on the third consecutive day of relief operations on Feb 8 in earthquake-hit Turkey and Syria. Over 8000 people have been reported dead so far. Thousands more are injured. Turkish President Erdogan said 13 million of the country’s 85 million people were affected, and he declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces. Three devastating quakes – of 7.8, 7.6 and 6.0 – hit Turkey’s southern regions on Monday causing widespread destruction in Turkey and in neighbouring Syria.
