GUWAHATI: Anshu Jamsenpa created mountaineering history on Sunday by summiting Mount Everest twice in five days – her fifth overall since 2011. A mother of two daughters, Anshu is the first Indian woman to scale the world’s highest mountain peak five times.

She had unfurled the Indian Tricolor on the world’s highest peak on May 16 at 9 am and again on Sunday at 7.45 am. Nepal’s climber Chhurim Sherpa had scaled it twice within a week in 2012.

According to Dawa Sherpa Lama, managing director of Dream Himalaya Adventure (DHA), Anshu Jamsenpa scaled Mount Everest along with Nepali climber Furi Sherpa. Incidentally, it was also Furi’s fifth summit. DHA is the handling agent of Anshu’s double ascent expedition.

Lhakpa Rangdu Sherpa, general secretary of Everest Summiteer Association, made the official announcement of Anshu’s double ascent from the Everest base camp on Sunday morning.

By scaling Mount Everest twice in five days, Anshu bettered her previous 2011 record of completing a double ascent in 10 days. Her third summit to Everest was in 2013.

“I cannot express how happy I am. I would attribute her success to people’s inspiration and encouragement,” her father Upendra Nath Kalita told the New Indian Express.

“I got the news from her husband Tsering Wange. He too was very excited,” Kalita added.

Tsering Wange is the president of All Arunachal Pradesh Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association. Anshu, an Assamese woman, took to mountaineering after her marriage with Tsering Wange, who is from Arunachal. The couple is settled in Arunachal’s Bomdila town.
