Paving the way for the Chennai Corporation to go ahead with the construction of multi-level car parking on Bashyam Road in front of Panagal Park in T Nagar, the Madras High Court has rejected a plea from social worker ‘Traffic’ K R Ramaswamy against the construction.

In his public interest writ petition, Ramaswamy alleged that if the construction was allowed, the entrance to the park would be blocked and people would not be able to freely move on Bashyam Road.

The Corporation appointed a consultant who submitted a project report. According to the report, the bench noted, the concept of multi-level car parking was to maximise car parking by utilising vertical space.“From the material, it is seen that the Chennai Corporation does not propose to encroach on the Panagal Park area and the park will be available for general public,’’ the bench said and dismissed the PIL.
