In an incident that shocked commuters on the busy Nungambakkam High Road, a 26-year-old woman jumped to her death from Anna flyover on Wednesday evening. Police said the woman, whose husband had abandoned her, committed suicide after her lover refused to marry her.

Police identified the woman as Anjali (26), a native of Kolkata, living in Kamarajarpuram east, Kodambakkam. She was working at a beauty parlour in Nungambakkam and was last seen walking on the flyover around 4 pm talking over her phone.

Traffic policemen noticed the woman sitting on the wall of the flyover and asked her to climb down. She then began walking down the flyover towards Thousand Lights but walked back again, and in a flash jumped off the bridge down to Nungambakkam High Road.

Eyewitnesses recalled seeing the flustered woman walking up the bridge. After she jumped, a man in a blue T-shirt attempted to revive her before she was lifted into an ambulance. “He sobbed and the woman was moved to a corner before she was carried away in the ambulance,” they said.
