CHENNAI: The HC stayed the prosecution of the folk dancer Mohanambal under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Justice MS Ramesh granted the injunction on Wednesday while passing interim orders on a criminal original petition from Mohanambal. It was alleged that she was involved in smuggling red sanders. After issuing notice to the authorities, the judge adjourned the matter till July 28.

According to the prosecution, the State police seized D4 crores and 73 sovereigns of jewellery from Mohanambal’s house in Vellore district. She and her sister Nirmala surrendered before a Vellore court in June 2014. The police also alleged that the dancer, with the help of her son Saravanan, had indulged in smuggling red sanders.
