CHENNAI: The process of vehicle registrations at the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), currently stalled at a few places due to issues involved in migrating to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, will be streamlined in the next few days, said Transport department officials.

In a circular issued in the first week of this month, the Transport Commissioner had ordered all 86 RTOs in the State to migrate to the new taxation system. However, there have been instances, such as the one in Tiruchy, where registrations have been held up, forcing customers to wait for long to get their vehicles delivered.

Speaking to Express, a State transport official said the problem was due to the different tax slabs (including cess) for various categories of vehicles, unlike the earlier taxation system when a fixed value added tax (14.5 per cent) was charged for all category vehicles.

The official also shifted the blame on to dealers. “Several of them are unable to produce an invoice incorporating the GST rates. Instead of seeking clarifications from the Commercial Taxes department and updating their own systems first, they are unfairly blaming the RTOs,” the official said.

When asked about a few RTOs facing difficulties in migrating, the official said the software developed by National Informatics Centre was being updated. “We hope to resolve all issues in the GST software within the next few days,” he said.
