New Chennai police commissioner vows to curb rowdyism

A Amalraj, a 1996-batch IPS officer from Kanniyakumari district, has served in several key policing assignments across Tamil Nadu.

CHENNAI: A Amalraj assumed office as the Greater Chennai Police (GCP) Commissioner on Friday and said the city police would focus on curbing rowdyism and ensuring swift action in crimes against women and children. His appointment order was issued on Thursday.

Amalraj, a 1996-batch IPS officer from Kanniyakumari district, has served in several key policing assignments across Tamil Nadu. After taking charge, Amalraj reviewed security arrangements at Lok Bhavan in Guindy for the swearing-in ceremony of IUML MLA Shajahan and VCK MLA Vanni Arasu.

Later in the day, he chaired a review meeting with senior officers and inspected preparations at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, where the Singapen Special Task Force is set to be inaugurated.

Amalraj previously headed the police commissionerates in Tambaram, Coimbatore and Tiruchi. He had also served in the Chennai city. He holds BSc and MSc degrees in Physics and was a hockey player. After joining the IPS in 1996, he began his policing career as assistant superintendent of police in Tiruppur.

Over the years, he served as deputy commissioner in Madurai and superintendent of police in Dharmapuri, Theni, Kancheepuram and Villupuram districts. Amalraj received the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Medal for meritorious service.

He later held key positions as DIG of Ramanathapuram, Tiruchy and Salem ranges and served as commissioner in Salem, Coimbatore and Tiruchy cities. He also worked as additional commissioner in Chennai before being elevated as additional director general of Police. Amalraj earlier served as Tambaram City Police Commissioner twice.

During his posting in Coimbatore, he played a key role in creating a police museum. He later contributed to the establishment of a similar museum at Egmore while serving as additional commissioner of police in Chennai.

During his tenure in multiple commissionerates, he focused on strengthening CCTV monitoring systems. He has also authored five books on leadership and personal development.
