CM: Arts College in Attappadi soon

ATTAPPADI: An arts college will be set up in the state sector in Attappadi and arrangements will be made to begin classes during the next academic year, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the handing over of the keys of houses built by Ahads and the beginning of the work on nine roads by the block panchayat at Attappadi here on Saturday.

A portion of the land acquired for the Attappadi Valley Irrigation Project (AVIP) would be utilised for the purpose if necessary, he said.

The government will look into how the land of the Adivasis were alienated from them over the years. The District Collector has been asked to inquire into this aspect.

Chandy said that the issue of land alienation faced by the Adivasis would be resolved soon and it would be done in a manner which will benefit them.

An agricultural package will be implemented for Attappadi after receiving the report of the officials from the Union Rural Ministry who visited Attappadi recently. Tribal welfare Minister P K Jayalakshmi said that the scheme drawn up for the welfare of the primitive tribes has been approved by the 13th Finance Commission.
