THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharanan has urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to give up his Home Department portfolio in the wake of third-degree treatment meted out in police stations. The third degree treatment is rampant in the police stations across the state and the death of Sreejith in Varappuzha is an example of the prevailing practice, he alleged. Though the CM repeatedly claims third degree treatment won’t be allowed, there have been several instances of innocents being framed and tortured in the police stations, Kummanam said.

In Varappuzha, the police had arrested a person after mistaking his identity and then trampled him. A section in the police department has become the henchmen of the CPM and is dealing with the public protests using grenades and lathis. The BJP will observe a protest day across the state on Wednesday to register their objection against this practice, Kummanam said.
