RAMESWARAM: Modern closed circuit cameras have been installed in Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram, Joint Commissioner of the temple Rajamanickam said on Monday. Thousands of devotees from all over the country are visiting the temple everyday and offering worship.

There were complaints that the employees of the temple were collecting extra amounts from those who bathe in the holy ‘theerthams’ in the temple.

In order to prevent these activities and also thefts, a camera was installed in the temple two years ago. But this camera had no facility for taking pictures at night. Therefore, modern cameras were installed in 14 points in the temple, capable of taking pictures even in poor light.

Joint Commissioner Rajamanickam said that 14 powerful closed circuit cameras have been installed in the temple which could cover 26 areas. Two revolving cameras have also been commissioned and linked to internet. They would facilitate the monitoring of activities in the temple at the monitor in the office. The JC will also be able to access these movements with his cellphone. This would prevent inconvenience to devotees, he said.
