HYDERABAD: Nearly two years after they were selected as teachers at model schools, scores of youth are still waiting for their appointment orders.

Despite clearing the recruitment tests for Post-graduate (PGT), Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) and principals in 2012, several aspirants are yet to fulfil their employment dreams owing to the lack of official interest in fast-tracking the recruitment process, aspirants claim.

Furthermore, some candidates who were selected for two or more posts are having to remain unemployed. “I was selected in 2012 for both PGT and TGT English but am yet to receive the appointment order. Private schools are refusing to hire me as they feel I will leave as soon as I get my appointment order,” B Balaraju from Warangal rued pointing out that he was forced to take up petty jobs to make ends meet.

In its phase I of recruitment, PGTs were recruited for all subjects except English, Telugu and Mathematics. Similarly, all notified TGTs were not recruited.

Consequently, as things stand, only 50 per cent of PGTs and TGTs working across 326 schools began operations in the 2013-14 academic year. Further, officials’ promise of conducting the phase II of recruitment has not materialised. Ever since notifications were issued for  7,100 posts in February 2012, the drive had been a damp squib. Aspirants also approached court, alleging discrimination, when it was notified that recruitment would be conducted only for English-medium aspirants. The High Court permitted Telugu-medium aspirants to write the exam for PGTs and principals but were not permitted to write the exam for TGTs.

When results were announced in October 2012, Telugu medium aspirants were denied appointments following which they moved the SC which directed officials to bring out a separate list comprising aspirants from both the media.

“Presently, there is only one TGT and PGT. This points out the falling standards of Model Schools”, Laxman Kurapati, a PGT English candidate from Guntur said.
