A man from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, who had returned from Oman, tested positive for the coronavirus on Saturday, taking the total number of confirmed cases in India to 34.

He has been admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai.

Two positive cases were also reported from Ladakh. Both the patients had a travel history to Iran.

All three are reported to be in stable condition.

Two other people from Punjab who had returned from Italy also tested positive in a preliminary test of their samples which had been sent to AIIMS, Delhi.

Their samples have been sent to Pune for confirmation.

The two have been admitted to the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar.

Jammu and Kashmir government says monitoring situation closely, no need to panic

Amid growing concern over the spread of coronavirus, the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday said it is monitoring the situation closely and there is no need to panic. Principal Secretary, the Planning, Development and Monitoring Department, Rohit Kansal, said the primary schools in Jammu and Sambha districts have been shut till March 31 as a precautionary measure.

Death toll nears 200 in Italy

With 49 new deaths in just past 24 hours, the death toll due to outbreak of deadly coronavirus rose to 196 in Italy. A total of 3,916 people were tested positive for the virus since the epidemic first broke out here 15 days ago, the Civil Protection Department said Friday.

Samples of 31 persons test negative in Chhattisgarh

No confirmed novel coronavirus case has been reported so far in Chhattisgarh with samples of 31 persons testing negative, a health official said.
Till now 31 persons from various districts were tested for possible exposure to the virus but none of them was found to have contracted the infection, he said.
The persons whose swab and blood samples were taken for testing have been placed under home isolation for 28 days as a precautionary measure, he said.

One Indian among 15 new COVID-19 cases reported in UAE

Passengers from 12 countries will be segregated from other passengers till the conveyer belt areas at airports, an official said on Saturday, amid rising concerns over coronavirus infections. This is part of a series of measures initiated by the Indian authorities to curb spreading of coronavirus, against the backdrop of more than 30 people testing positive for the infection in the country. Passengers from arriving from China, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Iran, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hongkong, Vietnam, Nepal and Indonesia would be segregated from other passengers, he said.

UP cancels licences of 5 medical stores for selling sanitisers and masks at inflated rates

The licences of five medical stores here have been cancelled after they were found to be selling hand sanitisers and face masks at inflated rates in the wake of the coronavirus epidemic scare, officials said.

The drug department conducted raids on a number of retail and wholesale medical stores in the district following several complaints of black marketing of precautionary equipment to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 infection, such as masks and sanitisers, they said.

15 quarantined in Maharashtra, no confirmed cases yet

As many as 245 people were admitted to isolation wards in hospitals in Maharashtra since January for possible exposure to the coronavirus and 229 of them tested negative for the infection, the state health department said on Saturday.

At present, 15 persons have been kept under observation at hospitals -- 12 in Mumbai and three in Pune. The laboratory reports of 16 persons were expected to be received by Saturday night, it said.

Two foreign nationals quarantined in Goa

Two foreign nationals were quarantined in Goa Medical College and Hospital for suspected exposure to the novel coronavirus, a senior state health department official said on Saturday. The samples of the two have been sent for testing to National Institute of Virology in Pune and reports are awaited, he added.

The Uttar Pradesh government has exempted its employees from using the biometric system to mark their attendance till March 31 in view of coronavirus, an official said.

TN coronavirus patient being treated at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital

The 45-year-old Tamil Nadu man, who tested positive for the Coronavirus, is a resident of Kancheepuram district and was working in Oman.

Dr P Sampath, the state's Deputy Director of Public Health, said the patient, a resident of Kanchipuram, had landed in Chennai on February 28. He consulted a doctor at his home town after developing cough and fever. Since he didn't get relief and started developing breathing difficulty, he was referred to Chennai's Stanley hospital. It was from here that there he was shifted to the coronavirus isolation ward at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

On Saturday, the National Institute of Virology, Pune confirmed that the sample sent to them had tested positive. Contact tracing has started. Eight members of his family and 19 others have been kept under observation at their homes.

Uttarakhand fully prepared to tackle coronavirus: Health officials

Delhi gurudwara committee to distribute over 10,000 masks free of cost

In view of coronavirus, the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) will distribute protective masks free of cost as a precautionary measure, its chairman Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on Saturday. The masks will be distributed through gurudwaras in the city managed by the DSGMC, he said.

The Tamil Nadu man who tested positive for coronavirus has been indentified as a 45-year-old resident of Kancheepuram district. The man has been working in Oman and upon arrival in Chennai, he was screened at the airport. He was then sent to Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital. His condition is stable.

A flight from Tehran on Saturday brought to the national capital swab samples of Indians in Iran who are suspected of having coronavirus infection, an airport official said. The flight, operated by Mahan Air, returned with many Iranian nationals at around 10:30 am on Saturday, an official at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here said. The flight landed at around 5.30 am.

Exports fell 17.2 percent, the biggest drop since February 2019 during the trade war with the United States, and imports dropped 4 percent, according to official data released Saturday.

Irish national undergoes self-quarantine at Odisha hotel

The 35-year-old suspect, who arrived from Ireland on Thursday evening was reported missing after the authorities of SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack intimated police about him allegedly fleeing the health facility.

He is said to have gone for self-isolation after consulting with doctors of Capital Hospital. He apparently does not have any major symptoms, only besides fever, which is normal for a person suffering from a common cold or any flu.

Anganwadis closed in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said anganwadis have been closed in view of the coronavirus scare. The government child-care centres have been closed from Friday, he added. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country is 31, according to Union health ministry officials.

  • From March 9 midnight all air travellers having visited or arriving from Italy and South Korea will require to submit a certificate of having tested negative from health authorities -designated lab in their countries for Coronavirus at the departure.

  • India has also suspended most visas issued to nationals of Japan, South Korea, Italy, Iran and China, as well as suspending visas of any travellers who had been to those five countries since February.

  • It has now been decided that all incoming international passengers must declare their travel history to health and immigrations officials at India's airports.

  • Arrivals from DGCA list of 12 countries undergo thermal screening, passengers with high temperature taken to quantantine.

  • Screening to be carried out at 21 airports across the country.

  • Regular (sticker) visa/e-visa granted to nationals of People's Republic of China, issued on or before February 5, 2020 were suspended earlier. It shall remain in force.

  • Those needing to travel to India under compelling circumstances may apply for fresh visa to the nearest Indian Embassy/Consulate," the advisory said.

  • An advisory had also directed passengers arriving directly or indirectly from China, South Korea, Japan, Iran, Italy, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand, Singapore and Taiwan to undergo medical screening at the port of entry

  • All Indian carriers are offering full refund or bookings to alternate destinations for flights that were booked earlier but are getting cancelled due Coronavirus scare.
  • GoAir stated that people have the option of availing a full refund or utilising the booking amount for any future travel with the airline.
  • In a travel advisory, Emirates has stated that those wishing to travel to Saudi Arabia will have to contact the Emirates office or their travel agent for refunds.
  • Others travellers having expensive insurance cover may get full refunds by the insurance companies if they have included everything under coverage.
  • But a larger number of insurers do not provide travel insurance against any pandemics outright. Moreover, any travel plan made now may not get covered for can cancellations due to Coronavirus

  • GoAir suspends flight operations to Dammam, Saudi Arabia after an advisory issued by the Saudi government to not allow non-Saudi residents to enter. It has also suspended flights to Thailand

  • Almost all major airlines operating out of India have suspended flights to China, Korea, Iran, Italy and some to Japan.

  • European and American connections provide by airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM, United Airlines from India continues.

  • 9 more airports to have thermal screening in India, total 30

    In the backdrop of coronavirus spreading in India, thermal screening has been expanded to nine more airports in India besides the existing 21, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Friday. Initially, the thermal screening started in seven airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

Service hospitals will work in synergy with local civil medical authorities and designated Indian Council of Medical Research labs.     No positive coronavirus case in Aandhra Pradesh says government

    Of the 24 samples that were sent for examination, 20 tested negative while result of the remaining four was awaited, the state health department said in a bulletin. "We have strengthened the surveillance for containment, control and prevention of COVID-19. Till date 361 passengers from COVID19-affected countries have been identified and placed under surveillance," Special Chief Secretary (Health) K S Jawahar Reddy said. Of the 361, 130 people are under home isolation and 218 people completed the 28 days observation period. Another 13 passengers are in hospital admission and are stable, according to the Special Chief Secretary.

    Coronavirus kits to be sold only on doctors' prescription: Maharashtra FDA

    In an order issued on Thursday, FDA commissioner Arun Unhale said the Maharashtra government and FDA had received several complaints of chemists selling PPE kits and N-95 masks at prices higher than the MRP. The FDA has also directed chemists to sell PPE kits and masks only on doctors' prescription, a spokesman of the FDA's Konkan division said. FDA officials have been directed to inspect the stock and storage of kits at manufacturing plants and supply chains and penalise those who hoard the equipment, the order stated.

    The main event of a mega parade and martial drills display, involving thousands of troops and their families, was to take place on March 13 at a Central Industrial Security Force camp in Ghaziabad near here to mark the 51st establishment day of the force. "The CISF day parade in Ghaziabad and related events to be held all across the country on March 13 have been postponed in view of the coronavirus outbreak," a senior official said.

    13 Iranian tourists quarantined at Amritsar hotel

    A 13-member group of tourists from Iran have been quarantined at a hotel in Amritsar and have been asked to not go out till their medical examination is completed, an official said. They reached Amritsar on Thursday night, the official added. If any of them are found symptomatic (for coronavirus), then samples will be taken, Amritsar Civil Surgeon Prabhdeep Kaur informed the media.

    Paytm shuts Gurugram office for 15 days after employee tests positive

    Paytm has shut its Gurugram office for up to a fortnight after one of its employees tested positive for coronavirus, the company said, as it looked to contain the spread of infection to other employees.
    "We are closely working with the health authorities to take preventive measures to ensure the safety of our colleagues. Our Gurgaon office will remain closed for up to 15 days while Noida offices will be operational from Monday onwards," a Paytm spokesperson said in an emailed query.
