Founded in 1881 by Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, HEC School of Management, France, finds itself in the top 20 of any B-school rankings. The history goes that French military and political leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, was behind the roots of the school so that “the best and the brightest” could be channeled into his armies and engineering corps.

HEC is famed for its master’s in management — Grande Ecole programme recruits students through a rigorous admissions process, both in France and abroad. The school selects students who show the highest potential and then guides them towards top careers in management. “The vocation of the school is therefore, to train its students to become responsible leaders, capable of anticipating changes in the world,” begins Bernard Garrette, associate dean of the MBA programme and professor of strategy and business policy.

He further adds, “We at HEC successfully meet this exciting challenge by ensuring that all knowledge dispensed by us is at the forefront of research, in all fields of management science; being up-to-date with on-the-field practices and expectations of businesses by maintaining extremely close links with the corporate world, and developing leadership and entrepreneurial skills amongst students and giving them the opportunity to have a more international outlook from the beginning and throughout their school life, through exchanges or double degrees, or even, on the campus itself.” HEC offers specialised master’s; one-year postgraduate programmes taught in French, designed for students who already hold a master’s degree in another field and wish to specialise in a specific field of management. They also have MBA, executive MBA and PhD programmes.

Besides, they are also part of the TRIUM alliance with London School of Economics and Political Science, UK, and Stern School of Business, New York University, USA, for a joint executive MBA. Wait, there’s more — part-time executive specialised master’s and other certificate and short-term courses. Custom-made programmes are also delivered for corporate clients.

What makes HEC special? “Our mission at HEC is to develop the global leaders of tomorrow, capable of serving as architects of a responsible world. A rigorous research environment and close connections to the corporate world are the cornerstones on which this aim is founded. The combination of high quality research, pedagogical innovation and strong corporate connections provides HEC community with the necessary tools and experience to challenge established rules and to invent the new social and economic paradigms of tomorrow’s world,” says Garette. In this context, hiring world-class faculty and a strong emphasis on research has made HEC what it is today, adds Garette. HEC has a permanent faculty of 110 professors, holding PhDs from the world’s most prestigious universities. In addition, they have 24 permanent affiliate professors, generally prominent members of the business community who have established a long-term relationship with HEC, 24 visiting professors from prestigious universities worldwide and 700 lecturers.

HEC is not far behind in the innovation race. “We became the first French B-school to launch a MOOC course hosted on the Coursera platform giving an opportunity for students and entrepreneurs across the globe to benefit from HEC faculty’s expertise,” says Garette.

With MBA being a major lure for students worldwide, it is only natural that the conversation steers towards it. “Our MBA course underwent a complete redesign in 2012, following a study carried out by the consulting agency, Bain &Company. Now the course is split into two phases: fundamental and customised. During the fundamental phase, students acquire core business skills crucial in carving out a successful business career. During the customised phase, they are able to tailor their MBA to suit their personal aspirations and professional objectives,” informs Garette.

You have five clear steps ahead of you: Candidate profile, application, pre-selection jury, interviews and admission. MBA course fee is €48,000 (approx `40 lakh). Sounds massive? There are scholarships to take care of the doom that just tried to threaten your spirits — need and merit-based awards are offered. HEC is high on internships too. “Our campus is ideally located near La Défense, the very heart of European business with the highest concentration of MNCs on the continent. This means that our students are able to benefit from the wide range of career and internship opportunities,” says the Prof. Garette is gung-ho about the placements too. “In our class of 2013, 89 per cent of students found employment within three months of graduation; 74 per cent of these changed job function, while 68 per cent changed job sector,” concludes Garette.
