Harassed over non-payment of their outstanding dues for over a year, thousands of sugarcane farmers of Nayagarh district have resorted to agitation. They staged a road blockade at Panipoila Chhak near Nayagarh Sugar Factory by burning tyres on Nayagarh-Khandapada road recently.

Uncertainty looms large over functioning of the factory this crushing season as farmers are reluctant to supply cane apprehending that the management will not make payment this season also. The farmers said the management has not honoured the commitment made several times in the past and violated the agreements made with the district administration.

The Director of the factory had said at a meeting with the Collector on December 6, 2013 that out of  Rs 2 crores of the outstanding dues, `90 Lakhs had been cleared and another Rs 1.1 crores would be paid before the crushing season. But nothing has been paid yet, even as boiler firing was done on December 27, 2013.

Sources said at a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary, the bankers were instructed to provide financial assistance to the sugar factory to make it functional by December 15, 2013.

Strangely, the four MLAs and three MPs of the district are indifferent to the sorry plight of sugarcane farmers and functioning of the only sugar factory in the district.
