The central government has sought a report on Bulandshahr "honour killing" from the Uttar Pradesh government and will also review laws on the crime, a minister said Tuesday.

Talking to reporters outside parliament, days after a man was killed in Bulandshahr, Minister of State for Home Affairs R.P.N. Singh said the incident was unfortunate.

"What has happened in Uttar Pradesh is unfortunate. This is something that the government has taken seriously," he said.

"We have asked the state government to send us details of the killing that has taken place. We are still waiting details from the UP government," he said.

Taking about laws on honour killing, Singh said the government is "very seriously trying" to amend laws to deter honour killings.

Abdul Hakim was killed in the Uttar Pradesh district Nov 22, and his wife alleged her family, chiefly brothers, were responsible. He had earlier participated in actor-producer Aamir Khan's social awareness TV series "Satyamev Jayate" and said his life was in danger.
