On Friday, ICMR DG Balram Bhargava wrote a letter to Bharat Biotech and principal investigators of medical colleges to complete the trial procedure of indigenous COVID-19 vaccine in a fast track method, so that results of clinical trial can be launched by 15th August.

The development came on a day when India's daily highest COVID-19 tally reached a new height as the country reported 20,903 new positive cases in the last 24 hours. It also registered 379 deaths in last 24 hours.

Positive cases stand at 6,25,544 including 2,27,439 active cases, 3,79,892 cured/discharged/migrated and 18213 deaths, as per the latest Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data.

Meanwhile, a potential COVID-19 vaccine indigenously developed by the Ahmedabad-based Zydus Cadila Healthcare Ltd has got nod from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for human clinical trials, according to a government source.

FIRs against two COVID-19 patients for jumping home quarantine in Himachal Pradesh

Police have registered FIRs against two COVID-19 patients in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district for jumping home-quarantine, officials said on Friday. The duo are from the Bhoranj area of the district and the FIRs were registered under sections 188, 269, 270 and 271 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for jumping home-quarantine guidelines despite being COVID-19-positive, the police said.

63 fresh COVID-19 cases in Jharkhand, count rises to 2,697

Sixty-three more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Jharkhand on Friday, taking the state's tally to 2,697, a government bulletin said. There are 681 active cases while 2,001 people have recovered from the disease, including 13 during the day, and 15 patients have died so far, it said.

    Of the over 6 lakh COVID-19 cases reported in the country till Thursday, 34,540 patients needed ICU care, 37,505 required oxygen and 9,272 were put on ventilators, health ministry sources said. They said of the 2,26,947 active cases, 2.53 per cent are in ICU (till 6 pm) compared to 2.63 per cent the day before, 0.45 per cent are on ventilator support as against 0.44 per cent as on Wednesday while 3.07 per cent are on oxygen as against 3.13 per cent as on Wednesday.

    Eight deaths, 1,213 new cases of COVID-19 in Telangana

    Telangana continued to witness a spike in COVID-19 cases with 1,213 people testing positive while eight deaths were reported on Thursday, taking the tally to 18,570 and the toll to 275. As many as 998 of the new cases were reported from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) areas, followed by neighbouring Medchal district with 54 cases.

    Rajasthan authorities on Thursday reported nine coronavirus deaths as 350 fresh infections surfaced, taking the numbers to 430 fatalities and 18,662 cases. According to an official report, three deaths were reported from Bharatpur, two each from Jodhpur and Bikaner and one each from Barmer and Bhilwara on Thursday.

    The number of coronavirus patients in Dharavi, Mumbai's biggest slum sprawl, increased to 2,301 on Thursday with the addition of 19 cases, a senior official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.     The Union Health Ministry has asked all states and UTs to hand over bodies of suspected COVID-19 cases to their relatives without waiting for laboratory confirmation of the infection but said the mortal remains should be disposed of as per government guidelines. A letter on the matter was sent to all states and UTs on Wednesday in the wake of issues raised regarding death of suspected COVID-19 patients and bodies not being handed over to relatives pending confirmation of test report by hospitals.

  • Delhi's first plasma bank to help treat novel coronavirus started functioning on Thursday, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal saying that COVID-19 patients can donate their plasma 14 days after recovery.

    Thane's COVID-19 tally reaches 34,646; to have total lockdown

    Thane district in Maharashtra registered 1,322 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, pushing its overall tally to 34,646, the administration said. The death toll due to the virus reached 1,094 with an addition of 30 deaths during the day, including that of 14 in Thane city, it said.

    Telangana reports 1,018 new COVID-19 cases, overall tally

    Telangana continued to witness a spike in COVID-19 positive cases with 1,018 new infections being reported on Wednesday taking the overall tally in the state to 17,357. The fatalities also increased to 267 after seven more people succumbed to the virus, a state government bulletin said.

    Kolkata Metro introduces online recharge system to encourage social distancing
