Sensex ends 93 points lower; realty, capital goods, power drag

Indian markets ended sharply loweron Thursday. Realty, capital goods and power stocks witnessed a fall whereas IT stocks registered a gain.

At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex declined 92.77 points or 0.42% at 21,740.09 with 22 components posting drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty fell by 41.15 points or 0.63% at 6,482.90 with 42 components registering drop.

Sensex Movers

Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed fall of 35.92 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (23.7 points), Larsen & Toubro (23.11 points), H D F C Bank (16.27 points) and State Bank Of India (14.19 points).

However, Tata Consultancy Services contributed rise of 37.44 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (14.42 points), Hindustan Unilever (14.09 points), Reliance Industries (7.33 points) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (4.61 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Consultancy Services (3.28%), Hindustan Unilever (2.01%), Wipro (1.09%), Infosys (0.96%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.91%), and Cipla (0.85%).

On the other hand, Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.74%), G A I L (India) (2.55%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.12%), Larsen & Toubro (2.12%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.97%), and Tata Steel (1.77%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Midcap settled lower -24.28 points or 0.36% at 6,715.30 however the Bse Smallcap gained4.32 points or 0.06% at 6,726.67 at the closing.The major losers in the BSE Midcap were Aban Offshore (2.9%), Allahabad Bank (2.5%), CORE Education and Technologies (1.75%), A I A Engineering (0.96%) and A B G Shipyard (0.54%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Ashoka Buildcon (8.97%), Hitachi Home and Life Solutions (India) (3.52%), Alembic Pharmaceuticals (2.12%), Adhunik Metaliks (2.11%) and Asian Hotels (East) (0.11%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 1,345., down by 30.61 points or by 2.23%. The major losers were Indiabulls Real Estate (4.32%), D L F (3.82%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (3.63%), Anant Raj (1.83%) and Oberoi Realty (1.19%).

The Capital Goods index was at 11,399.14, down by 225.15 points or by 1.94%. The major losers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.74%), A B B India (1.14%), A I A Engineering (0.96%), BEML (0.47%) and Bharat Electronics (0.23%).

The Power index was at 1,613.55, down by 26.50 points or by 1.62%. The major losers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.74%), Reliance Infrastructure (1.92%), Adani Power (1.66%), C E S C (1.52%) and A B B India (1.14%).

On the other hand, the IT index was at 8,814.89, up by 146.76 points or by 1.69%. The major gainers were Hexaware Technologies (2.87%), Oracle Financial Services Software (1.33%), Infosys (0.96%), H C L Technologies (0.39%) and Mphasis (0.11%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,329 advances against 1,538 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Polaris Financial Technology topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 846.72 million. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (Rs. 430.71 million), Axis Bank (Rs. 325.30 million) and Tata Steel (Rs. 323.01 million).

The volume chart was led by Alok Industries with trades of over 6.65 million shares. It was followed by Unitech (5.23 million), Jaiprakash Power Ventures (4.58 million) and L&T Finance Holdings (4.49 million).
