26 Nominated for Padma Awards

A total of 26 people from various fields were nominated by the State Government for this year’s Padma Awards - Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, the highest civilian awards of the country. The government recommended Ashtavaidyan Vaidyamadham Cheriya Narayanan Namboodiri (medicine) and P Gopinathan Nair (social work) for Padma Bhushan. The Padma Shri list has 24 persons, including actor Jagathy Sreekumar, Volleyball player Tom Joseph and Soorya Krishnamurthy.

The other people in the list are: P Jayachandran (art - carnatic musician and singer), Kanayi Kunhiraman (art - sculptor), Yusufali Kecheri (art - poet, lyricist), Mathoor Govindankutty (art - kathakali artiste), Mavelikkara S R Raju (art - mridangist), K J Jayan (musician), M G S Narayanan (historian), Dr V P Gangadharan (medicine), Dr Rajan Joseph Manjooran (medicine), Sunny Thomas (sports), C Radhakrishnan (literature/journalism), K M Roy (literature/journalism), George Onakkoor (literature), Perumbadavam Sreedharan (literature), P N C Menon (social work), P U Thomas (social work), Georgekutty Kareparampil (social work), K N Ananthakumar (social work), M G Sreekumar (art - singer), Dr Sahadulla (medical education) and Verghese Kurien (social work, trade and industry). The list was prepared by a Cabinet sub-committee with Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph as convenor, the Chief Secretary as secretary and Ministers M K Muneer, A P Anil Kumar and P J Joseph as members. The list was submitted to the Centre before the deadline of October 15, 2013.
