In the highest single day surge so far, Kerala on Wednesday reported 1,038 fresh COVID-19 cases, including 24 health workers and five councillors, taking the infection tally to 15,032.
The death toll climbed to 45 with a 75-year-old man from Idukki succumbing to the virus.
As many as 8,818 people were presently under treatment with 53 of them in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), including nine with ventilator support, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters here.

Uttarakhand CM said that Mahakumbh 2021 will be organized at the scheduled time by following all traditions and norms of the religious congregation after meeting with saints from Haridwar. "The auspicious Mahakumbh will take place at scheduled time. Rest of the changes will depend on how situation unfolds," said the CM.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Gujarat rose by 1,020 to 51,485 on Wednesday while fatalities went up by 28, including 19 in Surat, to 2,229 in the state, the health department said.

Speaking to Serum Institute’s CEO Adar Poonawalla through video conferencing on the progress of a COVID-19 vaccine, Naveen congratulated him for the recent promising results published in international journal Lancet. Serum Institute of India has collaborated with Oxford University to develop a COVID-19 vaccine and its subsequent human trials. The institute plans to start trials of the vaccine on around 5,000 volunteers in the country in August after it gets necessary approvals.
