COVID-19 HIGHLIGHTS | Total coronavirus cases touch 4789 in India; death toll rises to 124

There were reports that the Centre, after following requests from several state governments and experts, is considering extending the three-week-long COVID-19 lockdown after April 14.

One COVID-19 patient is likely to infect 406 people in 30 days if he or she refuses to follow lockdown restrictions or social distancing, the Health Ministry said on Monday, while quoting from a recent ICMR study. Addressing the routine press briefing, the ministry informed that the total number of coronavirus cases in India have increased to 4789 including 124 deaths.

Luv Aggarwal, joint secretary in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also said that the government is looking at designing a strategy for cluster containment.

Furthermore, the ICMR has tested over one lakh people and roped in 59 more private labs.

Earlier in the day, there were reports that the Centre, after following requests from several state governments and experts, is considering extending the three-week-long COVID-19 lockdown after April 14, government sources said.   • Haryana: 33 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported today. Total cases in the state stand at 129 which includes 2 deaths and 17 recoveries.

    Odisha reports first COVID-19 death after 72-year-old man with comorbid conditions succumbs

    Official sources said the 72-year-old man, a native of Jharpada in Bhubaneswar, was admitted to AIIMS on April 4. He had a history of chronic hypertension. "The person was in respiratory distress and died on Monday. Later his samples tested positive. His contact tracing and containment are on," a senior health official said.

    North Western Railway to run special parcel train service from April 7 to 14

    Amid the 21-day nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus, the North Western Railway has decided to run a special parcel train service from April 7 to 14 to transport goods and essentials. The Jaipur-Bikaner-Jodhpur-Ajmer-Jaipur parcel special will start at 3 pm from Jaipur and will return the next day at 7. 15 pm, North Western Railway spokesperson said. The service will cover Alwar, Rewari, Hisar, Sirsa, Hanumangarh, Merta Road, Pali Marwar and Marwar junction stations.

    The Uttar Pradesh government has suggested that the lockdown in the state may continue after April 14 in the wake of the rising number of coronavirus cases related to Tablighi Jamaat members. “The lockdown will not be removed if even a single person with the coronavirus is found in the state,” said Additional Chief Secretary, Home Awanish Awasthi while talking to the media. Moreover, chief secretary RK Tiwari also expressed the same view saying the lockdown imposed in Uttar Pradesh in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak may be extended if the situation didn’t improve after April 14.

    Fares of private buses from here to other cities have sky-rocketed for April 15 onward journeys in anticipation of lifting of the lockdown. On bus ticketing platform Redbus, the fare for Bengaluru-Hyderabad travel is between Rs 1,899 and Rs 3,948 for April 15. Similarly, a ticket for Mumbai is costing between Rs 2,381 and Rs 4,700.

    Status on PPE coveralls and N95 masks

  • Supply lines from abroad opened up today with receipt of 1.70 lakh PPE coveralls from China donated to India.Along with domestic supplies of 20000 coveralls,1.90 lakh coveralls will now be distributed to hospitals&will add to 387473 PPEs already available in country.

  • An order for 80 lakh complete PPE kits (including N95 masks) had been placed on a Singapore based platform earlier & now it has been indicated that supplies will commence from 11th April with 2 lakhs, followed by 8 lakhs more in a week.

  • Northern Railways have developed a PPE coverall. This is in addition to PPE coveralls&N99 masks developed by DRDO. Efforts are being made to start mass production of these products. Existing N95 mask producers have increased their capacity to about 80,000 masks/day

  • 2 lakh domestically produced N95 masks are being sent to hospitals. Including these, over 20 lakh N95 masks have been supplied by Govt. About 16 lakh N95 masks are presently available in country&this figure will increase with the fresh supply of 2 lakh masks

  • Orders have been placed for 112.76 lakhs standalone N95 masks and 157.32 lakhs PPE coveralls. Out of these, 80 lakh PPE kits will include N95 masks. The objective is to achieve a supply of about 10 lakh PPE kits per week.

    • Total positive cases in Maharashtra reaches 490 with 57 new patients detected today

    In Maharashtra, 57 new COVID-19 positive cases including four deaths in Mumbai on Monday. Total positive cases in Mumbai are 490 (including 34 deaths); 5 persons discharged today, total persons discharged till now- 59. 

    Total number of cases in Karnataka 163

    20 patients have recovered from Covid19 & have been discharged from hospitals in Karnataka. All international passengers have completed mandatory quarantine. 120 people have been discharged from isolation facilities so far. Not all is gloomy. Total cases at 163. Active cases 139 

    13 new cases in Kerala

    With nine cases in Kasaragod, two in Malappuram, one each in Kollam and Pathanamthitta, 13 new cases reported in Kerala.  

    50 more test positive in Tamil Nadu

    Of the 50 persons tested positive for Corona today, 48 had attended Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi; till today, 19,060 persons are home quarantine; so far six persons had lost their lives in TN due to this virus.

    CRPF officers, personnel in contact with infected doctor, test negative for coronavirus

    The CRPF said that a Chief Medical Officer had tested corona positive on April 2 and was admitted at AIIMS, Jhajjar, in Haryana. "Some officers and men who had come in direct contact with him were put under quarantine but have since tested negative," the statement said. 

    14-month-old boy with no travel history contracts coronavirus in Gujarat

    The child, whose test came out positive on Sunday, is on ventilator support and the locality where his labourer parents reside in Dared village has been put under complete lockdown to check the spread of the virus, officials said.

  • Coronavirus cases reach 523 in Delhi, with 20 fresh cases being reported in the last 24 hours including 10 attendees of Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin. One person died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, total deaths stand at 7. 25 patients are on ventilators.

  • Out of the total number of cases, 330 people are linked to Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi. Around 1000 samples of are being tested for COVID-19 daily.

  • From tomorrow, ration will be distributed at 421 govt schools to the poor who don't have ration card in Delhi. Each person will get 4 kg wheat and one kg rice. We aim to give ration to 10 lakh such people & will take more food grains from the Centre if need arises.

    • Total positive cases in Odisha reach 39

    There are a total of 39 positive cases in Odisha. 2 patients have been cured and discharged from the hospital, 87 persons are in quarantine. 

    Total number of cases in West Bengal 61

    As of 12 PM today, the total number of active Coronavirus cases reported in West Bengal is 61, of which 55 cases are from 7 families only. Only 3000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) have been sent by the Centre yesterday, I myself arranged 2,27,000 PPEs: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

  • 693 new COVID19 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number to 4067 in India out of which 1445 cases are related to Jablighi Jamaat. 76 per cent cases have been reported in males & 24 per cent in females.

  • In the last 13 days, Indian Railways transported sugar through 1340 wagons, salt through 958 wagons and edible oil through 316 wagons/tanks, to different parts of the country.

  • Number of COVID19 deaths stand at 109, with 30 people succumbing to it yesterday. 63 per cent of the deaths have been reported among people over 60 years age, 30 per cent in age bracket of 40 to 60 years & 7 per cent victims were below 40 years age.

  • During Coronavirus lockdown, 16.94 lakh metric tonnes of food grains have been transported across India till now. In 13 states, 1.3 lakh metric tonnes of wheat and in 8 states, 1.32 lakh metric tonnes of rice have been allotted.

  • We have allowed the use of Hydroxychloroquine for healthcare workers dealing with COVID-19 patients or high risk contacts of the patients though there is limited evidence of its efficacy. There is not sufficient evidence to use it at community level.

    92 staff members, including several doctors, of a Pune hospital quarantined after accident victim, who was being treated at the facility, tests positive for coronavirus. 

    Prez, PM, MPs to take 30% pay cut for 2020-21

    Union Cabinet approves Ordinance amending the salary, allowances and pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954 reducing allowances and pension by 30% w.e.f. 1st April, 2020 for a year. The President, Vice President, Governors of States have voluntarily decided to take a pay cut as a social responsibility. The money will go to Consolidated Fund of India.

    Delhi Government has decided that Lok Nayak Hospital (that includes GB Pant Hospital) with a capacity of 2000 beds and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital that can accommodate 450 beds will now be dedicated for Coronavirus cases only.

    Karnataka's Dharwad district now has zero active COVID-19 cases after lone patient discharged

    The 33-year-old man from Hosayallapur area in Dharwad was working in Australia. After the coronavirus outbreak in that country, he returned via Dubai and Muscat to Goa and then took a bus to Dharwad on the night of March 12. He quarantined himself at his house but after five days he suffered from a fever and visited a private hospital in Dharwad where doctors referred him to SDM hospital.

    Kerala doctors develop India's first walk-in kiosk to take samples for COVID-19 tests

    Kerala's Ernakulam district administration on Monday launched the Walk-in Sample Kiosk (WISK) to keep health workers safe while taking samples to test for COVID-19. A first of its kind in India, the WISK was designed by a team under Dr. Ganesh Mohan, RMO of Kalamassery Medical College. Launching the WISK on Monday, District Collector S Suhas said that similar technology was used in South Korea for mass sample collection. It takes less than two minutes for blood and swab sample collection.

    Google, in a statement, said it is working closely with state and central government authorities to surface the locations of these relief centres. Users can search for 'Food shelters in ' or 'Night shelters in ' in any of these Google products. The service will also be made available in Hindi soon, the statement said.

  • A four-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia has tested positive for COVID-19 at New York's Bronx Zoo, authorities said on Sunday. The tiger is believed to have contracted the virus from a caretaker who was asymptomatic at the time.

  • Since mid-February several precautionary measures such as regular spray of antiviral medicine inside the big cats' enclosure and in the garden have been taken, Alipore Zoo director Ashis Kumar Samanta said.

  • "The news of a tiger contracting COVID-19 is indeed a matter of concern. Since mid-February, we have been taking precautionary measures for big cats and other animals in our zoo. We had laid strict safety norms for all the caretakers, doctors and other staff of the zoo," Samanta told PTI over the phone.

  • Now it has been decided that tigers would be kept on a strict and close 24/7 observation so that in case of any situation, steps can be taken as fast as possible, he said.

  • "Presently caretakers and doctors daily check the health condition of big cats and other animals. We have called an emergency meeting of all the staffs especially caregivers, caretakers, and doctors, so that all of them follow the safety norms of wearing masks, gloves, and sanitizers while treating the animals," he said.

    COVID-19 positive man dies in Rajasthan

  • A 60-year-old coronavirus positive man died at the state-run MBS Hospital in Kota even as Rajasthan recorded seven more cases of the virus, an official said on Monday. The virus has so far claimed six lives in the state and infected 274 people. However, officials maintain that those who died were also suffering from other illness.

  • "A 60-year-old man with no recent travel history died at MBS Hospital in Kota. He was admitted yesterday and died late night. Eight new cases have come up, including the patient who died," Additional Chief Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said.

  • He said that a few people who had participated in the Nizamuddin event in Delhi were found in the locality where the deceased lived but their test report has come out negative. It seems the family is hiding travel and contact history.
