Vasan Faction Retains Grip in Revamped TN Congress Unit

Despite posturing by different groups in the Tamil Nadu Congress over the past few months, the dominance of the G K Vasan faction in the TNCC continued with AICC chairperson Sonia Gandhi announcing on Saturday that B S Gnanadesikan would continue as the TNCC president. While Vasan’s supporters took a lion’s share of posts in the reconstituted committee, Sonia tried to strike a balance by accommodating leaders of other factions as vice presidents and general secretaries.

“There were reports that Vasan is thinking of reviving the Tamil Maanila Congress. But the Congress high command has now ensured that the party in Tamil Nadu would be intact till the Lok Sabha elections by accommodating large number of Vasan supporters in key posts,” a newly appointed general secretary told Express. Significantly, the names of four sitting Congress MLAs have been left out in the reconstituted committee.

Thanking Sonia Gandhi for reconstituting the TNCC after a gap of 10 years, Gnanadesikan, in a statement here said it would give a new momentum and strength to the party. “We take a pledge to make Congress the frontline party in Tamil Nadu and hereafter the Congress party will move towards a new era,” he said and added that the list of secretaries would be released within 10 days. Kovai Thangam will be the treasurer of the TNCC.

The 17 new vice presidents are Arimalam Sundararajan, V R Bhagavan, Charubala Thondaiman (ex-Mayor), Erode Arumugam, C Gnanasekaran, K S Govindarajan, M N Kandasamy (ex-MP), K Kandasamy (ex-MP), P N Nallusamy, Pushparaj (ex-MLA), T Sadasivalingam, A P C V Shanmugam, Sujatha, R Thamodharan, H Vasantha Kumar (ex-MLA), P R S Venkatesan (ex-MP) and Dhara Shafee.

Those who have been appointed as the general secretaries are Balasubramanian (Salem), N Balasubramanian, A Chandrasekar, Chiranjeevi, G K Doss, Jeyachandran (ex-MLA), S Jeyasimha, M Jothi, Keezhanur Rajendran, C D Meiyappan, Naesey Ramachandran, M Palanivel, G Rajendran, A S Sakthivadivel, D Selvam, Shastri Srinivasan, C R Sundararajan, M Sundaram (ex-MLA), Tambaram Narayanan, K Thanikachalam, Venugopal @ Maaran, Vidiyal Sekar, ex-MLA, Vijayan, Hassan Ali, Vanamaamalai, V M Thangavel, G Sundaravadivelu, Vishnu Prasad and Mayura Jayakumar.

The 43 executive committee members included Union ministers P Chidambaram, G K Vasan, Jayanthi Natarajan and Sudarsana Natchiyapan, E V K S Elangovan, K V Thangkabalau, Kumari Ananthan, R Prabhu and Su Thirunavukkarasar.  The high command has also named 54 district Congress committee presidents.
