Sensex climbs 355 points; Bharti, ICICI Bank, RIL rise

Indian equities extended gainsin the post noon tradetoday on heavy foreign capital inflows, tracking positive domestic and global cues. Realty, banking and capital goods stocks witnessed a gain whereas IT stocks registered a fall.

At 2.23 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 354.55 points or 1.65% at 21,868.42 with 21 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 111.10 points or 1.74% at 6,512.25 with 38 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

H D F C Bank contributed rise of 67.94 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Larsen & Toubro (55.18 points), State Bank Of India (38.67 points), Bharti Airtel (33.84 points) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (22.63 points).

However, Infosys contributed fall of 44.33 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (14.88 points), Wipro (10.79 points), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (7.42 points) and Hero Motocorp (1.17 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Bharti Airtel (6.32%), I C I C I Bank (5.99%), Reliance Industries (5.61%), Larsen & Toubro (5.03%), State Bank Of India (4.67%), and H D F C Bank (3.94%).

On the other hand, Dr Reddy's Laboratories (4.58%), Wipro (3.52%), Infosys (2.94%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.45%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.30%), and Hero Motocorp (0.58%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.08% and 0.07% respectively.The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Amtek Auto (2.3%), Allahabad Bank (2.02%), A B G Shipyard (0.5%), Amtek India (0.37%) and A I A Engineering (0.35%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Action Construction Equipment (7.39%), Dr Datsons Labs (2.05%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.98%), Hubtown (0.75%) and Reliance MediaWorks (0.63%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 1,362.82, up by 72.89 points or by 5.65%. The major gainers were Housing Development and Infrastructure (9.6%), D L F (8.82%), Indiabulls Real Estate (5.58%), Oberoi Realty (0.79%) and Anant Raj (0.52%).

The Bankex index was at 13,537.06, up by 658.93 points or by 5.12%. The major gainers were Bank Of Baroda(4.36%), H D F C Bank (3.94%), Federal Bank (3.9%), Bank Of India (3.4%) and Canara Bank (2.03%).

The Capital Goods index was at 11,192.73, up by 409.08 points or by 3.79%. The major gainers were BEML (5.33%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.67%), A B B India (2.77%), Bharat Electronics (0.9%) and A I A Engineering (0.35%).

On the other hand, the IT index was at 9,479.88, down by 231.69 points or by 2.39%. The major losers were Hexaware Technologies (4.76%), Infosys (2.94%), Mphasis (1.95%), H C L Technologies (0.82%) and Oracle Financial Services Software (0.79%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,361 advances against 1,398 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Tata Consultancy Services topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,112.96 million. It was followed by Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 860.86 million), Yes Bank (Rs. 843.91 million) and I C I C I Bank (Rs. 754.14 million).

The volume chart was led by Media Matrix Worldwide with trades of over 13.83 million shares. It was followed by Jaiprakash Associates (7.03 million), Unitech (6.16 million) and Housing Development and Infrastructure (3.42 million).
