Sensex ends 164 points higher; capital goods, FMCG, IT rise

Indian markets settled on a higher note on Friday. Capital goods, FMCG and IT stocks witnessed a gain. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex gained 164.11 points or 0.80% at 20,700.75 with 20 components registering rise. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty climbed by 64 points or 1.05% at 6,155.45 with 36 components registering rise.

Sensex Movers

I T C contributed rise of 40.64 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (26.7 points), Larsen & Toubro (19.63 points), Infosys (14.62 points) and Reliance Industries (13.11 points).

However, Bharti Airtel contributed fall of 14.78 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Reliance Communications (5.08 points), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (3.95 points), H D F C Bank (3.08 points) and Maruti Suzuki India (1.46 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Larsen & Toubro (1.89%), I T C (1.83%), Tata Steel (1.80%), I C I C I Bank (1.62%), State Bank Of India (1.46%), and Jindal Steel & Power (1.21%).

On the other hand, Bharti Airtel (2.91%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.82%), Maruti Suzuki India (0.52%), Cipla (0.51%), Hero Motocorp (0.51%), and Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.33%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.71% and 0.49% respectively.The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Amtek Auto (3.15%), Amara Raja Batteries (0.9%), Allahabad Bank (0.75%), Aban Offshore (0.37%) and A I A Engineering (0.11%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Dr Datsons Labs (5.02%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (4.95%), Action Construction Equipment (1.35%), Trident (1.15%) and Aarti Industries (0.61%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Capital Goods index was at 9,852.64, up by 120.72 points or by 1.24%. The major gainers were BEML (3.14%), Bharat Electronics (1.03%), Crompton Greaves (0.78%), A B B India (0.35%) and A I A Engineering (0.11%).

The FMCG index was at 6,392.80, up by 75.84 points or by 1.20%. The major gainers were Godrej Consumer Products (3.03%), Jubilant FoodWorks (2.83%), I T C (1.83%), Dabur India (1.64%) and United Spirits (0.27%).

The IT index was at 9,568.51, up by 110.14 points or by 1.16%. The major gainers were H C L Technologies (4.4%), Oracle Financial Services Software (1.61%), Infosys (1.02%), Mphasis (0.89%) and Hexaware Technologies (0.61%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,512 advances against 1,212 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Multi Commodity Exchange of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 468.33 million. It was followed by JSW Holdings (Rs. 385.26 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 377.82 million) and Idea Cellular (Rs. 354.99 million).

The volume chart was led by Idea Cellular with trades of over 2.76 million shares. It was followed by Reliance Communications (2.63 million), Reliance Energy Ventures (2.39 million) and Unitech (2.22 million).
