The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) driver Naveen Kumar, who knocked down two pedestrians at Royan Circle near Chamarajpet, surrendered on Friday.

“We were on the lookout for Kumar and around 12.30 pm, he surrendered before the magistrate in the city with his lawyer. Preliminary investigation revealed that 27-year-old Kumar was recently appointed and he was on probation,” a senior police officer said.

Kumar, in his statement, said that he lost control of the bus due to brake failure while overtaking a parked goods vehicle. He tried to stop the bus by ramming into a footpath but lost control and crashed into seven other  vehicles, the officer said.

“However, we are waiting for motor vehicle inspectors to examine the bus and ascertain the reason for the accident. Kumar will be taken into custody on Saturday for further investigation,” the officer added.

On Thursday morning, 25-year-old Sanjay Angadi, an employee of a mobile service provider, was killed and his colleague Nanjunda Gowda sustained severe injuries when the BMTC bus knocked them down. The bus also crashed into two autorickshaws and other vehicles. BMTC officials reportedly said that the accident occurred due to the driver’s negligence.
