Rajinikanth made twitter quake. And if you’re thinking it’s the latest Rajini joke, ask the guys at Twitter India how their day was. After word got around that Superstar had a verified twitter account (@SuperStarRajini) at 1 pm on Monday, twitter users went crazy and an avalanche of users rushed to ‘follow’ the reticent, unassuming movie icon.

By 1 am on Tuesday, a whopping 1.58 lakh users started following the actor’s account and the number was jumping by the minute. To authenticate the fact that it was indeed him, Rajini had made a video that was posted with an explanation on how he wanted to reach out to his fans.

“I decided to start with Twitter because I felt that the platform is abuzz with all the news and trends that happen across the globe and I’m told that this is where all the best Rajini one liners are!” he said. Previously, the Pope had created a Twitter flood by garnering 5 lakh followers a day after joining Twitter, across 5 languages.

In a surprise announcement, web services engagement major CA Digital Media announced that they had been contracted to expand Brand Rajini’s presence on the Internet, through a new venture called Fluence. Incidentally, CA is the same company that handles the digital accounts of Bollywood A-Listers, including Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan. Excited about the association, Ashish Joshi, VP Digital & Business Head - Fluence said: “We are thrilled to partner with the enigmatic Rajinikanth. The digital landscape is exploding and when you work with Thalaivar the possibilities are endless. Twitter is the first step in building and growing his online presence and getting all the fans out there to directly engage with the phenomenon that is Rajinikanth.”

What were the Superstar’s first words on Twitter? Nada! It was all one-way traffic as Rajini’s account replied to 10,000 odd users sending them a standard ‘thank you’ message and a link to a Kochadaiiyaan poster as promised to all those who followed him in the first week.

Also, in a rare gesture, Twitter India welcomed the icon to their site with a tweet. Said Twitter’s India Market Director, Rishi Jaitly, “This is truly an ‘only-on-Twitter’ moment as Superstar Rajinikanth’s debut on Twitter also marks his debut in the digital space more generally. We welcome Rajinikanth to Twitter.” Traffic overload on the micro-blogging site was apparently unprecedented.

And, if you’re wondering how many people Rajini is following, the answer none — Superstar can only be followed, not follow, right?
