The Secretariat siege of the LDF has literally turned out to be an ultimatum to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for his alleged role in the Solar scam case. Inaugurating the siege here on Monday, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said that if Oommen Chandy had any commitment to the cause of public activity, he should resign immediately without putting the post of the Chief Minister to further disgrace. “The Solar scam, which has caused tremendous outrage in society, should have been probed by a judicial commission. Everyday we are getting more and more information, more and more exposures about the scam,’’ he said. Karat said Chandy was still refusing to accept responsibility. Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) president H D Devegowda, who addressed the gathering, said Kerala former Chief Minister K Karunakaran had resigned when there was an adverse observation from the court in the Rajan case related to the custodial death of a college student during Emergency. “The Chief Minister should order a judicial probe and vacate his office till the probe is over,’’ he said. CPI general secretary Sudhakar Reddy said under the Congress regimes at the State and the Centre, each scam was getting bigger than the earlier ones. Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan said former judge V R Krishna Iyer had advised the Chief Minister to resign. ‘’If the Chief Minister does not heed to the demands of the people, they will forcefully remove him from his seat,’’ he warned. CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, who presided over the meeting, said the Chief Minister’s days in power were numbered. Pinarayi said their stir was not to topple the UDF Government but to dethrone Oommen Chandy. The Chief Minister is saying that nobody can prove that he had known Saritha Nair, one of the prime accused in the Solar scam case, Pinarayi said.
