The CPM state secretariat sought the resignation of Minister Shashi Tharoor from the Union Cabinet and asked him to face investigation in view of his wife’s mysterious death.

In a statement issued here after the secretariat meeting, the CPM state secretariat observed that the mystery behind Sunanda Pushkar’s death had not been cleared yet.  The doctors who conducted the autopsy test had stated that it was “sudden, unatutral death”.

“They also stated that there were wounds on Sunanda’s body. The Sub Divisional Magistrate, who conducted the inquest, had asked the police to conduct investigation into three probabilities- suicide, murder and accidental death. Now the Crime Branch wing of the  Delhi Police is in-charge of the investigation,” it said.

“The post-mortem report has reference to 15 wounds on Sunanda’s body,” it said. The secretariat pointed out that the death occurred within days of Sunanda’s allegation that Tharoor had links with a Pakistani journalist who she alleged was an ISI agent.

“Sunanda had also alleged that she was taking the burden of corruption charges in IPL deal to save Tharoor and she had something to reveal to the media. She had telephoned several mediapersons on the day before her death and offered to give interviews. The angle of suspicion strengthens as the death occured before the interview,” it said. The secretariat alleged that instead of taking Tharoor into custody and questioning him, the police were helping  him. The statement said the investigation by Delhi police, under the Union Home Ministry, against the Union Minister would be a farce. “The Prime Minister should ensure impartial investigation by removing Tharoor from the Cabinet in case Tharoor does not resign on his own,” the statement said.

It also said that the Congress leadership had challenged the women of the country by promoting Tharoor to the post of party spokesman. The secretariat called for strong protest against the stand of the Union Government and the Congress party. Meanwhile, the Secretariat discussed the issue of inducting  BJP and RSS rebels in CPM at Kannur. The isssue had flared up following Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan’s open criticism against the party’s move to induct them.

He also said that those rebels who had constituted NaMo Vichar Manch were opportunists and should not be trusted.
