The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance in Bangladesh Monday called for a 72-hour countrywide strike from 6 a.m. Tuesday demanding cancellation of the schedule for parliamentary polls.

Nazrul Islam Khan, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member, announced the work stoppage at a press conference at party chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office Monday evening, the Daily Star reported.

The BNP-led opposition alliance again demanded holding of elections under a non-party government.

Addressing the press conference, the BNP leader also demanded immediate release of senior BNP leaders from jail.
