Amid continuing complaints of fleecing by auto drivers, the City police have come out with a slew of steps, including an exclusive 24X7 helpline, to register violations.

Harassed commuters can send SMS to the designated numbers 9003130103 and 7418503430 citing the auto’s registration number. Complaints like refusal to use meter, charging above the government tariff and other deviations can be sent to the numbers.

Meanwhile, police plans to set up at least 100 assistance booths at important points, including Central Railway Station, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, High Court and IIT, to enforce the use of meters and state tariff.

City Police Commissioner S George said that the booths would be to help make auto trips in the city pleasant. “You flag an auto and you lose your peace of mind by arguing with the driver. That shouldn’t happen,” he said.

According to him, recent survey conducted by police showed that 65 per cent of auto drivers in the city comply with State tariff and use meters. “Those who do not comply would be brought to book through calculated efforts by the police,” he said.

To make the effort effective, cops who man police assistance booths would record registration numbers of drivers at starting point and if there was any deviation from using meter, would impose fines. In case of repeated offences,  police would recommend to transport department to cancel permits.

Arrangements have been made to monitor auto drivers via CCTV cameras, he added.
