An 8-year-old girl was raped by some men at Sanjeevada in Shamshabad on Sunday.

According to the police, the girl was left at her grandparents’ house as her parents had gone to sell flowers a day before Vinayaka Chaturthi. When they returned, they saw the girl bleeding and took her to a local hospital.

Later, she was sent to Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad where her parents were told that she had been raped. The girl’s parents then lodged a complaint at the RGI Airport police station.

Tirupati: On a day when the entire nation is eagerly waiting for the court verdict in the sensational Nirbhaya gang rape case in New Delhi, a 6-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered near Yerpedu in Chittoor district on Tuesday.

The Yerpedu police have registered a case under the Nirbhaya Act.

The girl, a Class II student, was picked up from near her school  by her neighbour, sexually assaulted and brutally murdered.

She hailed from Kukkalagunta village in Yerpedu mandal.

Police said the girl went near her school on Sunday morning to play with her friends. A 25-year-old man of the same village, T Giri, took her away from the school and since then she had been missing.

With the girl not returning home even by evening, the worried parents enquired with her friends who told them that Giri had taken her way. After confirming that Giri too went missing along with the girl, her parents lodged a police complaint on Monday evening.

Police found her dead in a sugarcane field near the village. Since the body bore no marks of major external injuries, police  suspect it to be a case of rape and murder, and sent the body to the Srikalahasti area hospital for postmortem.

Though police are tightlipped on the arrest of the accused, it is learnt that they have taken Giri into custody and are questioning him at an undisclosed location.

Tirupati Urban SP SV Rajasekhara Babu, additional SP Umamaheswara Sharma and other officials went to the spot where the body of the girl was found and enquired the local people over the incident.

Rajasekhara Babu told Express that the girl had been smothered to death.
