Defence Minister A K Antony has promised to seriously consider pleas by stakeholders of the Cochin Shipyard for getting defence orders for the yard.

During the commissioning ceremony of Indian Coast Guard vessel Abheek in Kochi, he said he would try to do what could be done in the matter.

Union Minister K V Thomas had earlier made a special request to the Defence Minister to look into the issue.

He had requested him that even if there are some technical issues, those should be sorted out.

Antony said the shipbuilding industry is facing a major global crisis. “No orders are coming from abroad due to the financial crisis. The only available market is defence shipbuilding, that too is from the Navy and the Coast Guard. Two major shipyards -- Hindustan Shipyard and Goa Shipyard -- are without orders,” he said.

He promised to look into the requests made by Thomas, P Rajeeve MP and various trade unions regarding the issue.

Antony said an expert committee instituted by the Centre had earlier recommended to remove the Cochin Shipyard from contention for orders.

However the issue will be seriously looked into, he assured. “I have been associated with this shipyard for a long time. Though I cannot do anything against the procedures, your request will be considered seriously,” Antony said.
