Sensex gains over 250 points; realty, capital goods rise

Indian equities extendedgains on Wednesday after the RBI
unexpectedly retains interest rates. The market participants were
expecting a hike of 25 basis points. Realty, capital goods, oil
& gas and auto stocks witnessed a rise.
At 2.14 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 251.52 points or 1.22%
at 20,863.66 with 28 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was
trading higher by 80.15 points or 1.31% at 6,219.20 with 49
Reliance Industries contributed rise of
45.82 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Housing Development
Finance Corporation (45.26 points), Larsen & Toubro (30.53
points), State Bank Of India (22.49 points) and Oil & Natural
Gas Corporation (18.09 points).
However, Infosyscontributed fall of 0.85 points in the Sensex.
It was followed byHindustan Unilever (1.02 points), Wipro (1.07
points) and ACC (1.57 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bharat Heavy
Electricals (4.60%), Bajaj Auto (3.06%), Larsen & Toubro
(2.92%), State Bank Of India (2.84%), Hero Motocorp (2.82%), and
Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.79%).
On the other hand,Jindal Steel & Power (1.62%) was the
onlyloser in the Sensex pack.
Sectors in Limelight
The Realty index was at 1,379.71, up by 46.93 points or by
3.52%. The major gainers were Housing Development and
Infrastructure (5.93%), D L F (5.4%), Anant Raj (5.04%), Indiabulls
Real Estate (4.35%) and Godrej Properties (0.96%).
The Capital Goods index was at 10,180.38, up by 254.19 points or
by 2.56%. The major gainers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (4.6%),
Alstom India (2.8%), Crompton Greaves (2.79%), F A G Bearings India
(0.61%) and BEML (0.07%).
The Oil & Gas index was at 8,557.69, up by 176.46 points or
by 2.11%. The major gainers were Hindustan Petroleum Corporation
(2.87%), G A I L (India) (2.36%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation
(0.73%), Castrol India (0.24%) and Cairn India (0.19%).
The Auto index was at 12,153.99, up by 210.11 points or by
1.76%. The major gainers were Bajaj Auto (3.06%), Hero Motocorp
(2.82%), Ashok Leyland (2.25%), Exide Industries (0.52%) and Bharat
Market breadth was positive with 1,361 advances against 908
Value and Volume Toppers
Indusind Bank topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover
of Rs. 1,375.49 million. It was followed by Power Grid Corporation
Of India (Rs. 815.77 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 642.46
million) and I C I C I Bank (Rs. 531.03 million).
The volume chart was led by Power Grid Corporation Of India with
trades of over 8.14 million shares. It was followed by Indusind
Bank (3.20 million), Unitech (2.69 million) and Orchid Chemicals
& Pharmaceuticals (2.30 million).
