To curb illegal tapping of electricity during the Ganesh festival, the Central Power Distribution Company Ltd (CPDCL) has introduced a scheme under which Ganesh pandal organisers can avail electrical connections by paying money. Every year, during the 10-day festival, there are instances of illegal power tapping to illuminate pandals and for decoration lighting, which also poses the danger of people getting electrocuted.

According to a CPDCL press release, temporary supply will be given for illumination of Ganesh Pandals by collecting a flat amount in advance based on the connected loads. The power distribution company appealed to organisers avail this opportunity and avoid illegal tapping of electricity which is an offence under the Electricity Act, 2003.

Safety measures

Regarding the safety precautions to be followed at the pandals, the company asked the organisers to examine the surroundings before doing any electrical work and not to allow children near the power lines or throw objects on the power lines which might cause short circuits.

Standard service wire without any joints must be used for connections.

Snapped wires must not be touched and the electricity department must be informed immediately. In case of any emergency, people can contact the electricity department by dialing 155333 or contact the CPDCL officials.
