When KPCC president V M Sudheeran spoke about Idukki Lok Sabha segment candidate and Youth Congress state president Dean Kuriakose as the nominee of  Rahul Gandhi the other day, was he indicating that certain things related to selection of candidates for LS polls in the state went beyond the control of the state leadership?

Sudheeran asserted that there was no such interference in the choice of candidates given in the list, which was accepted as such by the Congress high command.

Addressing election meetings at Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam on Wednesday, Sudheeran had said  that Dean Kuriakose was given ticket as per the wish of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

“What I meant by referring to Dean Kuriakose in Idukki segment as Rahul Gandhi’s nominee was that the latter was keen that there should be adequate representation to youth and women in the Congress LS candidates’ list submitted from the state. The state leadership was quite aware that Rahul will certainly look into that and accordingly, we worked towards it. The names of Dean and a few others including two women were presented by us against this backdrop, which was accepted also,” KPCC president V M Sudheeran told ‘Express’.

Rahul Gandhi had made a lightning visit while Dean was proceeding with his Kerala Yatra early this year.

He joined the rally and cheered the YC activists, pitchforking Dean into more limelight. When Dean replaced sitting MP P T Thomas, after the latter locked horns with the local Catholic church leadership over the Kasturirangan report, Dean earned the sobriquet of  ‘Rahul’s Boy.’

Sudheeran, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala are on record that the LS candidates’ list was unanimously presented by them, after consultations.

Rahul had a special interest for inclusion of more youth and women contestants, as he was for promoting new faces and in the case of sitting MPs, rating their all-round performance and acceptability for giving seats.
