Sensex ends flat; metal up, IT, teck down

Indian markets ended the volatile sessionflaton Wednesday. IT and technology stocks witnessed a fall whereas metal stocks registered a gain.

At the close, the 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex ended flat with a rise of 0.25 pointsat 21,832.86, 19 components posting rise. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went up by 6.85 or 0.11% at 6,523.50 with 34 components registering rise.

Sensex Movers

Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed rise of 30.02 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (24.05 points), H D F C Bank (18.19 points), Reliance Industries (14.21 points) and Tata Steel (12.6 points).

However, Tata Consultancy Services contributed fall of 44.07 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (34.95 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (30.98 points), Mahindra & Mahindra (15.57 points) and Tata Power Company (11.23 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Steel (4.58%), Hindalco Industries (4.44%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.77%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.50%), Bharti Airtel (1.35%), and H D F C Bank (1.06%).

On the other hand, Tata Power Company (5.30%), Tata Consultancy Services (3.84%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (3.22%), Mahindra & Mahindra (2.79%), Coal India (2.63%), and Infosys (2.32%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.30% and 0.46% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Amtek India (4.84%), Alstom India (3.56%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (1.03%), A B G Shipyard (0.87%) and Andhra Bank (0.6%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Reliance MediaWorks (3.1%), Aarti Industries (2.79%), Action Construction Equipment (1.05%), Advanta (0.75%) and A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.39%).

Sectors in Limelight

The IT index was at 8,668.13, down by 198.97 points or by 2.24%. The major losers were Mphasis (2.55%), Infosys (2.32%), Oracle Financial Services Software (2.29%), H C L Technologies (0.75%) and Hexaware Technologies (0.31%).

The TECk index was at 4,818.55, down by 79.8 points or by 1.63%. The major losers were G T L Infrastructure (2.76%), Mphasis (2.55%), Oracle Financial Services Software (2.29%), H C L Technologies (0.75%) and Deccan Chronicle Holdings (0.32%).

On the other hand, the Metal index was at 9,140.81, up by 189.60 points or by 2.12%. The major gainers were Hindalco Industries (4.44%), JSW Steel (2.62%), Hindustan Zinc (2.54%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.5%) and Bhushan Steel (0.28%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,501 advances against 1,366 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Tata Steel topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 600.98 million. It was followed by Sunteck Realty (Rs. 594.11 million), Tata Consultancy Services (Rs. 574.78 million) and Infosys (Rs. 485.87 million).

The volume chart was led by Cals Refineries with trades of over 4.78 million shares. It was followed by Unitech (4.76 million), L&T Finance Holdings (3.55 million) and Rutron International (3.46 million).
