Sensex gains nearly 200 points; JSPL climbs 7%

Indian equitiesremained higherin the post noon tradeon Tuesday led by gains seen in banking, capital goods and power stocks.

At 2.29 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 189.91 points or 0.93% at 20,653.97 with 21 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 55.60 points or 0.92% at 6,128.90 with 39 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

I C I C I Bank contributed rise of 49.39 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Housing Development Finance Corporation (47.45 points), HDFC Bank (33.57 points), State Bank Of India (15.33 points) and Larsen & Toubro (12.57 points).

However, I T C contributed fall of 10.75 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Bharti Airtel (3.65 points), Wipro (0.54 points), Tata Power Company (0.26 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Jindal Steel & Power (7.07%), I C I C I Bank (3%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.95%), Maruti Suzuki India (2.73%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.13%), and H D F C Bank (2.06%).

On the other hand, G A I L (India) (0.76%), Bharti Airtel (0.72%), Coal India (0.55%), Cipla (0.52%), ITC (0.48%), and Dr Reddy's Laboratories (0.21%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.71% and 0.65% respectively.The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Alstom India (3.83%), Allahabad Bank (2.93%), A I A Engineering (2.55%), Aban Offshore (1.99%) and A B G Shipyard (0.7%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Reliance MediaWorks (4.37%), Aarti Industries (2.57%), Trident (2.11%), Adhunik Metaliks (0.52%) and Styrolution ABS (India) (0.04%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Bankex index was at 12,085.68, up by 287.31 points or by 2.44%. The major gainers were H D F C Bank (2.06%), Canara Bank (1.88%), Bank Of India (1.68%), Bank Of Baroda (1.16%) and Federal Bank (0.54%).

The Capital Goods index was at 9,571.72, up by 147.77 points or by 1.57%. The major gainers were A B B India (13.6%), Alstom India (3.83%), A I A Engineering (2.55%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.13%) and BEML (0.35%).

The Power index was at 1,540.08, up by 20.37 points or by 1.34%. The major gainers were A B B India (13.6%), Adani Power (3.8%), Reliance Infrastructure (2.87%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.13%) and C E S C (1.5%).

The Metal index was at 9,103.38, up by 114.31 points or by 1.27%. The major gainers were Jindal Steel & Power (7.07%), JSW Steel (3.36%), Hindalco Industries (1.37%), Sesa Sterlite (0.58%) and Steel Authority Of India (0.25%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,353 advances against 1,174 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 964.73 million. It was followed by Godrej Consumer Products (Rs. 875.89 million), Infosys (Rs. 659.94 million) and A B B India (Rs. 426.08 million).

The volume chart was led by Shalimar Productions with trades of over 3.04 million shares. It was followed by Spicejet (2.88 million), Hexaware Technologies (1.78 million) and Shrey Chemicals (1.73 million).
