Sensex hits all time high; up 159 points

Indian equities rallied further in the post noon tradeon Thursday. Both Sensex and Nifty were trading at a new life time high.

At 2.17 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 159.32 points or 0.75% at 21,436.18 with 22 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 61.65 points or 0.97% at 6,390.30 with 42 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

I C I C I Bank contributed rise of 54.57 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Reliance Industries (26.3 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (19.84 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (12.4 points) and Reliance Infrastructure (12.32 points).

However, Tata Motors contributed fall of 8.29 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (7.23 points), Hindustan Unilever (2.13 points), State Bank Of India (1.65 points) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.05 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.54%), I C I C I Bank (3.19%), Hindalco Industries (2.73%), Jindal Steel & Power (2.68%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.10%), and G A I L (India) (2.08%).

On the other hand, Tata Motors (1.17%), Cipla (0.84%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.64%), Hindustan Unilever (0.31%), Wipro (0.29%), and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.21%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 1.00% and 1.23% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allcargo Logistics (3.93%), Alstom India (3.72%), Amara Raja Batteries (1.02%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.14%) and Aban Offshore (0.13%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Styrolution ABS (India) (4.26%), Dr Datsons Labs (4.08%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (1.78%), Trident (1.07%) and Aarti Industries (0.32%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 1,279.86, up by 40.63 points or by 3.28%. The major gainers were Housing Development and Infrastructure (5.09%), D L F (4.25%), Indiabulls Real Estate (4.16%), Godrej Properties (3.81%) and Parsvnath Developers (3.17%).

The Power index was at 1,582.16, up by 37.76 points or by 2.44%. The major gainers were Reliance Infrastructure (10.65%), C E S C (3.54%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.54%), A B B India (1.38%) and Adani Power (0.68%).

On the other hand, the HC index was at 10,604.30, down by 8.84 points or by 0.08%. The major losers were Cadila Healthcare (1.19%), Cipla (0.84%), Biocon (0.69%), Aurobindo Pharma (0.69%) and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.63%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,639 advances against 1,018 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Reliance Infrastructure topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 460.27 million. It was followed by Tata Elxsi (Rs. 413.56 million), Reliance Capital (Rs. 332.47 million) and Yes Bank (Rs. 319.60 million).

The volume chart was led by Spicejet with trades of over 3.93 million shares. It was followed by Hindustan Construction Company (3.14 million), Unitech (2.95 million) and Jaiprakash Associates (2.56 million).
