Customs officials found gold biscuits worth `1.21 crore cleverly hidden inside two water purifiers brought into the city on Friday.

Noufal Kunhahammed and Ayuub Parottakath, both from Kerala, arrived from Dubai at the Kempegowda International Airport on an Emirates flight in the evening.

“We had definite information about the consignment. We scrutinised each and every bag they were carrying,” an official said.

But the scrutiny did not reveal much. Everything seemed in order. The officials’ eyes then fell on a brand new water purifier Noufal was carrying. The box had a warranty card and a user guide CD.

Meanwhile, Noufal answered all queries confidently. Customs officials plugged in the water purifier and found it in perfect working condition.

They then got to the lathe condenser inside the purifier. It was moulded and nothing was visible from the outside. Officials decided to cut the purifier open and found gold biscuits wrapped in a sponge sheet inside the magnetic circuit.

Their suspicions confirmed, they cut open another purifier brought in by Ayuub and also found gold biscuits hidden in the same place.

“Usually, baggage and luggage scanners can detect material like this. But in this case, the scanner was indicating a black substance inside the water purifier, but nothing was clear,” said the official. There were 15 gold biscuits in Noufal’s purifier and 19 in Ayuub’s. Together, they were allegedly smuggling in 4.05 kg.
