Selected households in 160 panchayat wards and 160 urban blocks in Kerala will be covered in the nation-wide 71st round of Socio-Economic Survey on health and education to be launched by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) on January 1.

“The six-month survey will assess important aspects of daily life such as expenses incurred by households on healthcare and education and, for the first time, IT literacy,” Deputy Director General of NSSO’s field operations division (southern Kerala) Subrata Dhar said.

On Wednesday, Dhar inaugurated a three-day workshop here for the NSSO officials.

“NSSO officials will visit select households to collect the data. There are 80 primary  workers for data collection and 80 supervisors. Kerala has been divided into north and south zones for the purpose,” he said.

“This is an important exercise as our data is used extensively for policy planning by Central and State Governments,” he said.

Households are categorised into rich, middle class and relatively poor on the basis of Monthly Per-Capita Expenditure (MPCE) for selection.

NSSO’s sample survey is a detailed questionnaire-based exercise which may take two to three hours to cover a household.

“We have questions in up to 11 different ‘blocks’ in the two categories- ‘Health and Morbidity’ and ‘Education and IT Literacy’,” Dhar said.

Among other things, the survey on health will look at the prevalence rate of morbidity, extent of health services accessible to the elderly, and money spent by  households on healthcare.

“We will also be looking at the popularity of alternate medical systems among the public,” Dhar said.

Money spent on private and public educational institutions, participation of people aged between five and 29 years in education, rate of discontinuation of studies are some of the aspects that will be assessed in the education survey.

The last NSSO survey on education was conducted in 2007-08 and on health in 2004.

The 2013 survey, which begins on January 1, will conclude on June 30.
