The green ministry finally endorsed the K Kasturirangan-committee report that recommended a “no-tolerance policy” with respect to highly environmentally damaging activities in 37 per cent of Western Ghats, which comprise of pristine forests, world heritage sites, and tiger and elephant corridors.

The remaining 60 per cent of the area, according to the high-level working group report, is human dominated, used for agriculture and plantation. The six states are Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa.
