HYDERABAD: TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao has been unanimously elected as leader of the TRS Legislature Party, paving the way for him to become the first chief minister of Telangana, which is all set to become the 29th state of the country on June 2.

The newly-elected 63 MLAs and 11 MPs of the pink party met at Telangana Bhavan, the party headquarters, here on Saturday. Etela Rajender and Rajaiah proposed Rao’s name and all others seconded it.

According to sources, the TRSLP unanimously passed a resolution seeking lifting of the cases allegedly foisted on Telangana students during the movement by the then government in the united Andhra Pradesh. This gesture it wanted the new cabinet to take at its first meeting.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi secretary-general K Keshav Rao told mediapersons after the meeting that the date of swearing-in by Chandrasekhar Rao would be decided after the lifting of the President’s rule and formation of the new Assembly.

Rajender said welfare would be the first priority of the TRS government. “As more than 80 per cent of the people of Telangana live in rural areas, our government will focus on agriculture. At the same time, we will give priority to developing the new state on the industrial front also,” he added.

The TRS leaders are likely to meet governor ESL Narasimhan on Sunday to inform him of the resolution passed by their legislature party electing Chandrasekhara Rao as its unanimous leader.
