Responding to complaints from Christian groups about attacks, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday declared that minorities and their institutions in the State will be protected from antisocial elements.

He was speaking at a felicitation function during the 15th annual celebration day of the Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations at St Joseph’s Indian High School in the city. “We are working for the welfare of religious and linguistic minorities and our main interest is to protect them. The recent attacks on minorities in the State have created a sense of fear, but I will make sure that incidents like this would not repeated,” the CM said.

He added that people indulging in moral policing would be dealt with strictly and ‘unwanted’ elements who created social unrest in the name of religion, caste and language would be punished according to the law.

The Federation placed a number of demands before the CM, including a request to investigate the killing of Father K J Thomas, the rector of St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, who was found murdered in his office-cum-residence in April 2013. Assuring action, Siddaramaiah said,  “I cannot talk about it but the people involved in this gruesome act will be nabbed at the earliest.” Bernard Moras, Archbishop of Bangalore, said, “There is no breakthrough in the case. The CM has promised to instruct police to speed up the  investigation.”

The Federation also asked the CM to grant an acre of land to build a community hall. They also sought representation in various boards and corporations.
