'Ensure Maximum Participation in Polls'

Governor Nikhil Kumar has stressed on the need to ensure maximum participation of citizens in elections to make our democracy meaningful.

Inaugurating the state-level National Voters’ Day observance at Kanakakunnu Palace hall here on Saturday, the Governor pointed out that as responsible citizens everyone had to contribute towards forming a government.

“Voting is a political right and one should remember that each and every vote has a value. Only this can make the electoral process in our country valid,” he said.

Appreciating the initiative of the Election Commission and everyone behind the observance of the day, the Governor said that the day would help create awareness among new voters, especially youth, about the importance of participating in the electoral process. He also urged young voters to cast their franchise irrespective of caste, creed, religion and even regional influences.

Chief Secretary E K Bharat Bhushan presided over the function.

“It is the responsibility of every citizen to create awareness among youngsters and others about the need to get enrolled in the voters’ list without fail. This will help new voters develop a commitment as responsible citizens of the country,” he said.

The Governor administered the National Voter’s Day pledge to the gathering and also presented voter identity cards to two new electors to mark the state-level distribution of the new identity cards.

Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto, Institute of Parliamentary Affairs director general T Varghese, State Election Commissioner K Sasidharan Nair and District Collector K N Satheesh spoke.

The formal function was followed by distribution of prizes to school and college students for winning various competitions conducted by the Election Commission.
