Senior Congress leader and Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan met Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder Vijayakant at his residence on Tuesday evening, in what was described as a ‘courtesy call’. Even as the meeting poured fuel on the flames of speculation that the Congress is going all out to co-opt the DMDK into its alliance for the Lok Sabha elections, Vasan’s aides insisted that the two leaders did not discuss any political matters.

Vasan visited Vijayakant’s residence in Virugambakkam, and is reported to have spent about 50 minutes there.

“The Minister went there to greet Vijayakant and his son, Shanmuga Pandian, for the announcement that Shanmuga Pandian is going to act in a movie. The Minister was not in town when the announcement was made and this was purely a courtesy call,” said a close Vasan aide.

The aide insisted that the two leaders did not discuss politics. “They did not discuss even a single word of politics. They have been family friends for a very long time, so the minister went over in a personal capacity,” said the aide.

The Congress has been isolated politically in the State, and has been reportedly going all out to add parties to its alliance. Vasan had said in a speech in September that the Congress would be happy to have the DMDK in its alliance. Political circles have also been awash with rumours that the DMDK is gravitating towards an alliance with the BJP.
