SL Prez Panel Gets Just One Plaint on IPKF

There was only one complaint against the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) before the President’s Commission on Disappearances in North and East Sri Lanka from 1990 to 2009, despite the Lankan government’s propaganda about the atrocities committed by the IPKF during its deployment in the Tamil areas of the island from July 1987 to March 1990.

Scribes covering the sitting of the Presidential panel in Jaffna from February 14 to 17 told Express that there was only one complaint but even that was so vague and confused that the media chose to ignore it. The general suspicion was that a pro-government group had set up the complainant.

In order to prevent India from supporting a US resolution at the UNHRC calling for an international investigation into the “war crimes”  committed by the Lankan armed forces in the last phase of the 2006-2009 Eelam War IV, Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and a few columnists had spoken of and written about the need to include the excesses committed by the IPKF in the inquiry. However, this campaign has secured no support anywhere.
