Sensex, Nifty up 1%; Mid and smallcaps underperform

Indian equitiesgained momentum in the post noon trade on Tuesday on the back of buying interest seen in banking, capital goods and power stocks.

At 12.58 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 195.80 points or 0.96% at 20,659.86 with 21 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 60.05 points or 0.99% at 6,133.35 with 38 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed rise of 49.83 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (48.92 points), H D F C Bank (31.32 points), State Bank Of India (16.87 points) and Larsen & Toubro (12.26 points).

However, Bharti Airtel contributed fall of 4.56 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (4.51 points), Tata Power Company (1.04 points), D L F (0.17 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Jindal Steel & Power (5.68%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (3.10%), I C I C I Bank (2.97%), State Bank Of India (2.15%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.03%), and H D F C Bank (1.92%).

On the other hand, Bharti Airtel (0.90%), G A I L (India) (0.73%), Coal India (0.55%), Tata Power Company (0.52%), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (0.44%), and I T C (0.20%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.75% and 0.70% respectively.The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allahabad Bank(3.14%), A I A Engineering (2.36%), Aban Offshore (2.27%), Alstom India (1.34%) and A B G Shipyard (0.3%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Trident (3.87%), Aarti Industries (2.63%), Adhunik Metaliks (1.05%), Styrolution ABS (India) (0.97%) and Action Construction Equipment (0.76%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Bankex index was at 12,082.69, up by 284.32 points or by 2.41%. The major gainers were Bank Of India(2.52%), Canara Bank (2.28%), H D F C Bank (1.92%), Bank Of Baroda (1.71%) and Federal Bank (0.81%).

The Capital Goods index was at 9,549.61, up by 125.66 points or by 1.33%. The major gainers were A B B India (7.04%), A I A Engineering (2.36%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.03%), Alstom India (1.34%) and BEML (0.08%).

The Power index was at 1,535.36, up by 15.65 points or by 1.03%. The major gainers were A B B India (7.04%), Reliance Infrastructure (2.63%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.03%), Adani Power (1.17%) and C E S C (0.81%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,325 advances against 995 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 910.25 million. It was followed by Godrej Consumer Products (Rs. 875.09 million), Infosys (Rs. 639.49 million) and Reliance Industries (Rs. 316.81 million).

The volume chart was led by Spicejet with trades of over 1.93 million shares. It was followed by Cals Refineries (1.33 million), Southern Ispat and Energy (1.27 million) and Godrej Consumer Products (1.15 million).
