The recent cases of violence against women in the country have given rise to a slew of mobile safety applications. Most of these work from within your smartphone and inform preset contacts in case you are in danger. However, Chirag Jagtiani, an entrepreneur in the safety app space opines that in times of emergency, most people do not have the time to access their cell phones and alert their friends.

After having given the issue much thought, Chirag has come up with a mobile wristband and pendant which sends out an SOS signal to a preset list of contacts along with a map based location of the person’s phone.

He says that this is much easier than reaching for a phone when being attacked. “The problem with just an SOS app is that if someone grabs you, or even if you fall down, would you have time to find your phone, unlock it, trigger the alarm? I don’t think so. With my wristband or pendant, help is just a double click away,” he said.

A first time entrepreneur, Chirag spent 10 years working for various companies in the telecom sector. A global citizen, he grew up in Africa, studied banking and finance in Pune. Over the years, Chirag has worked in Europe and China before starting ‘spotNsave’, his company and also the name of the product.

On the face of it, spotNsave is a simple wristband or pendant which is available in five colours, white, black, brown, light, blue and pink. However, besides the emergency functions, it also vibrates when you receive a phone call or SMS. A proximity alert lets you know if you leave the band /pendant or your phone behind when leaving any place. Both appliances connect to the phone via bluetooth.

Explaining the working of the band, Chirag said, “As soon as the user initiates an SOS, an SMS is sent to all listed people containing details of your location in the form of a Google Map link for smart phones and the whole address in case of non smart phones. The SOS call will be automatically updated every 2 minutes till the user manually cancels the alarm.”

While GPS based location reporting can be accurate upto 30 meters, for users who do not keep their GPS tracking service switched on, spotNsave will also track location based on data provided by the phone’s network provider. The SMS, which can be sent to five preset contacts, will include the approximate accuracy of the location.

After launching spotNsave in December last year, Chirag has managed to sell around 180 devices to date. “I have managed to fund my project and my company myself. Online sales have helped and other consulting projects help fund my company further,” Chirag said. However, he is actively looking for distributors to help him sell the product in India. As of now, people can order the products online by visiting The price for the wristband is currently around 28 USD which roughly converts to Rs 1800 based on prevailing currency rates.
