The 18th international Children’s Film Festival  got off to a colourful start at Lalitakala Thoranam at Public gardens here on Thursday.

I&Bminister Manish Tewari, CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy and others lit the traditional lamp to formally open the festival.

Actor Ranbir Kapoor and child artist Darsheel Safary were the star attractions at the inaugural ceremony. The event was also attended by veteran actor-director Amol Palekar and renowned lyricist-director Gulzar.

Speaking on the occasion Kiran Kumar Reddy stressed the need for both the state and the Central governments to ensure that more films are produced for children. He said the government has already allotted land for a permanent venue of the film festival and would create the necessary infrastructure.

Manish Tewari said that film festivals are not only occasions to showcase creativity, innovation, enterprise but also to reinforce right to plurality of thoughts and expression. “The film festival shall provide us an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to ensure that totalitarianism, fascism and all such sectarian mindsets that squeeze that liberal spaces in the world are ostracized from the main stream of human thought,” he said.
